TEKsystems Research Finds Gaps in Perceived Value of IT Talent Among Internal Groups

HANOVER, MD – November 09, 2010 – IT leaders report a significant gap in the way internal groups value attracting and retaining IT professionals. While 92% of IT leaders indicate that their companies believe attracting and retaining top talent is critical to the organization, far fewer respondents agreed that this belief extends across human resources (38%) and procurement (28%) groups.

TEKsystems, the nation’s leading technology staffing and services company, today announced findings from its quarterly IT and Talent Survey, conducted in partnership with the Inavero Institute. This quarter’s survey reflects the perspectives of over 1,000 CIOs and IT decision makers in the U.S. and Canada.

“The perceived gap between organizational stakeholders and the value they place on IT talent is concerning,” says TEKsystems Director, Rachel Russell. “Especially as HR and procurement groups assume more responsibility in the talent acquisition process, it’s critical for organizations to ensure all stakeholders are in alignment regarding priorities and operational procedures that reinforce those priorities.”

Russell continues, “Business groups typically act in line with what defines success for them. While both procurement and HR groups surely care about making quality placements, other success metrics, such as cost savings and time to fill open positions, likely make demanding claims to their attention.”

With only 50% of IT leaders indicating that HR and procurement’s talent acquisition priorities are in line with IT’s, IT leaders may be at risk of being too far removed from their talent acquisition processes. Forty-eight percent report neutral feelings regarding the impact these policies have on the quality of IT talent, and 41% feel neutral that these policies allow hiring managers to be more productive. Furthermore, the majority of respondents (54%) believe that HR and procurement policies slow down the hiring process.

“The large degree of neutrality could indicate a lack of proximity to, or awareness of, hiring policies and procedures,” says Russell. “The most successful talent acquisition processes we’ve supported at TEKsystems ensure that all stakeholders’ needs are represented. Cost, speed, and compliance priorities are balanced with the need for quality hires. IT managers, moreover, are highly involved in the talent acquisition process. After all, these individuals are essential to setting accurate expectations and providing necessary insight about the opportunity and candidate success factors.”
