What is talent matchmaking?

February 20, 2015

I recently spoke to a long-time TEKsystems consultant who had made an unusual transition from network engineer to software developer. He possessed top-notch network skills and knowledge, but really wanted to become a developer. One of our recruiters identified a client who wanted an experienced network pro who could also pitch in with coding tasks—a very rare combination of skills. She made the match between the two, allowing the network pro to enhance his coding skills and eventually make the leap to full-time developer, while satisfying the client’s need for a rare skill set combination.

Sound like lucky matchmaking for the candidate and client? Sure, but as the saying goes, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” And TEKsystems is well-prepared to meet those matchmaking opportunities. Why?

Our Consultant Placement Process is basically a fancy name for talent matchmaking. It rests on several tenets:

Long-term candidate relationships with candidates. Our recruiters understand IT candidates—not just what’s on their resumes, but their other skills, goals and interests. They know that just because someone hasn’t done a particular type of work doesn’t mean they don’t want to or aren’t qualified. Understanding a candidate’s full profile of interests and needs takes time, which is why TEKsystems places so much value on things like meeting candidates for lunch and staying in touch.

Building real relationships with candidates allows us to understand their career needs and help meet them. And staying in touch past the first job allows us to gain a deeper familiarity with a worker’s evolving skill sets and goals.

Our scale. We’re the biggest IT staffing provider in North America—by a long way. This means we have a lot more IT job listings than our competitors. We also have a relationship network with 81 percent of the IT workforce. The math is simple: more jobs and more candidates allow us to make more perfect matches.

Training and development. If candidates need to enhance or brush up on skills to broaden their opportunities, we can help. We offer our candidates a huge array of free training through Skillsoft, and training discounts through TrainUp. We also offer performance feedback and career coaching.

Deep client relationships. These let us understand what clients really need and desire in a candidate beyond a job description (an imperfect tool for finding candidates if ever there was one!). These help us identify candidates much better than an applicant database can—and also helps us prepare candidates to interview.
