Brian Nguyen, a senior systems engineer in Colorado, has a big extended family. Unfortunately for Brian, most of them live in Georgia and southern Florida. Like many wanderers, when Brian had his own children, he wanted to raise them closer to his relatives.

Of course, finding an IT job more than 1,500 miles away can be a daunting—and expensive—task. Fortunately, Brian hooked up with Direct Placement Account Manager Jason Venn in TEKsystems’ Jacksonville, Florida, office. Through several conversations, Jason came to understand Brian’s goals, interests and strengths beyond his resume.

As a long-time recruiter and account manager in the Jacksonville area, Jason has a large network of IT professionals and hiring managers. He used these relationships and his personal knowledge of Brian to convince several companies to give Brian’s resume a close look.

While Brian was offered several interviews, Jacksonville-based VyStar Credit Union proved the best fit. After an initial phone interview, the company flew Brian to Florida for a meeting. Jason arranged for some of the client’s employees (whom TEKsystems had placed) to talk to Brian ahead of the interview. These conversations gave Brian a great view into the culture, environment and technologies of the credit union, and the extra preparation and insight helped Brian ace the interview.

What could have been a difficult transition from Colorado to Florida suddenly got much easier when VyStar offered Brian the position at $5,000 more than his asking point—plus a sign-on bonus to help with relocation costs. Finally, Brian’s TEKsystems recruiter and account manager also eased the transition by offering advice during his hunt for a house to rent in Jacksonville.
