Business needs for the past few years and into the foreseeable future are heavily IT-oriented. This has been advantageous for recent entrants and seasoned professionals in the field, as their skills are generally in high-demand. However, as with any industry, specific niches are not always as valued as others. While data scientist positions may outnumber candidates for the next few years, this is not true for other IT jobs.
Notably, telecommunications and data processing, hosting and related services added 7,200 jobs to the market in July, according to a recent study from Foote Partners. While these roles previously only accounted for, at most, 13.7 percent of the new IT jobs added to the industry in the six months prior to July, the latest figure accounts for 39 percent of all new IT positions during the month.
These figures suggest IT professionals should maintain a diverse skill set to take advantage of the job market. Although specialization may help an individual stand out when applying for a position, it also runs the risk for the individual of certain abilities being rendered obsolete by new technology, followed by a sudden decrease in demand and greater level of competition.
Finding work and maintaining training

Dice noted in June that more organizations will likely be hiring their IT staff in the second half of 2013 than in the first half, so information technology workers may have more opportunities in the months to come than they had earlier in the year.
