Knowing what to expect in an interview can help land IT jobs

Career opportunities in IT are increasing due to the proliferation of various forms of technology at many companies across a number of industries. From big data analytics projects that rely on quality database management to unified communications adoptions that need well-configured network to operate correctly, there are several areas in which IT jobs are growing.

Despite the increase in employment offerings, IT professionals shouldn't simply rest on their laurels, thinking that it will be easy to land the job of their choice. Rather, it's becoming a more competitive market as industry workers ready themselves for the top roles in the sector. 

In the past, tech positions were fairly straightforward and required a technically savvy individual who was capable of building a corporate infrastructure and fixing glitches as they came. In today's business world, however, IT services staff members are worth their weight in gold as pivotal operations are driven by technology, meaning server or application downtime could negatively impact a company's productivity. 

Therefore, CIOs and IT managers are striving to recruit the most innovative candidates on the market, individuals who are able to find creative solutions for a variety of business-related challenges. 

Having a great resume is a major advantage, but that is only half the battle when it comes to winning over a hiring manager. More than ever, the interview is becoming the weapon of choice for IT leaders looking to recruit top talent. Expect the unexpected when entering the interview room. 

Know how to whiteboard
According to CIO Magazine, whiteboarding is becoming a more popular tool used by IT recruiters during the interview process. Although tech professionals may be able to find a great solution to a problem and outline the implementation procedure in their heads, they need to be able to convey their thought process in a physical manner. Being able to quickly and coherently draw up project plans that are easy to understand is an important skill for all IT professionals to have in the modern business world. 

The source suggested that, before an interview, applicants should practice whiteboarding at home. Think back on past experiences and projects that required a collaborative plan to address and outline the procedures that were successful in establishing a solution. This process is all about visualization methods that will help most candidates better organize their thoughts. 

Tech jargon isn't everything 
Simply put, the vast majority of industry professionals understand fancy tech buzzwords and jargon. It's hardly impressive for interviewees to sneak in industry term after industry term in order to impress the interviewer. Rather, it's more likely that the hiring IT manager will value a candidate who can express ideas while avoiding using complicated terminology. 

Aundrea Marchionna is tech professional who has been working in the industry since 1989 and is experienced in conducting and being the subject of interviews. She told Computerworld that questions about how to explain technical processes to non-tech savvy staff members are some of her favorites. 

The corporate world is becoming more homogenized, with business departments becoming more reliant on IT support, and vice versa. Being able to effectively communicate with all members of the staff is an important quality for tech professionals to have. Instead of brushing up on tech terms, IT applicants should practice ways to explain complicated concepts or common business technology procedures while avoiding resorting to use of industry buzzwords. 

With so many jobs available, it can be challenging for IT workers to find the job that is best suited to their qualifications.
