Free training spotlight: Java programming

August 9, 2016

By Lisa Dare

If you’re looking for an in-demand IT job, look no further than Java development. Java is the No. 1 needed skill, and it’s as popular in Boise as it is in Napa.

Java programming basics: Should you get certified?

There is lots of conflicting advice about whether or not to seek a Java (or any programming) certification.

  • A programming certification can help a new developer land an interview
  • Some large corporations and governments prefer or even require certifications

  • If you have on-the-job experience, a programming certification may not add to your credentials
  • Some people—especially in startups—perceive a person with certifications as an unsuitable fit for learn-on-the-fly tech culture
  • Your time might be better spent contributing to an open source project that will build and showcase experience

The nice thing about obtaining a certification is that you can choose whether or not to advertise the credential, depending on the situation.
