TEKsystems IT Staffing & Services Buyers Survey: Quality of Consultants Remains More Important Than Price

HANOVER, MD – July 09, 2009 – Despite the weakened state of the US and Canadian economies, IT staffing and services buyers say the quality of IT consultants provided is most important when selecting a vendor. While buyers’ evaluation criteria also includes price, quality of consultants is more than twice as important to their decision.

The survey was developed by TEKsystems®, the leading provider of technical staffing and services, and conducted by an independent research firm through a web survey with more than 1,600 buyers from companies across the United States and Canada.

Buyers were asked, “When selecting which technical staffing firms to work with when you have a position to fill, how would you allocate 100 points to reflect the relative overall importance of the following?” Their responses:

  • Ability to provide quality IT personnel: 45

  • Pricing: 19

  • Account manager service/expertise: 16

  • Timeliness/speed of filling requirements: 13

  • Range of service capabilities: 4

  • Geographic coverage: 2

  • Other: 1

According to Mike McSally, TEKsystems' VP of Staffing Operations: “There are tons of assumptions around speed to market and price in the recruiting industry. Recruiters automatically assume that they need to fill each requisition immediately. While speed and price are important to satisfying any customer, when dealing with human capital there has to be more taken into consideration. TEKsystems puts forth a great deal of effort to understand not only our customer’s technology challenges, but also the business challenges they are trying to solve. While understanding a customer’s technology and business challenges may take more time up front, we feel it is the only way to ensure a win/win in the recruiting effort.

Significantly, quality is important not just for the IT hiring managers but also for other roles, like HR and Procurement, who are involved in IT staffing and services vendor selection. The survey asked the same question to members from each group and the allocation to quality was consistently ranked most important by a wide margin across functions.
