Building an IT Security Operations Centre

The challenge:Diagnosing Gaps in Project Delivery

As part of their IT security uplift, our client’s global HQ in Japan spearheaded an organisation-wide security and governance enhancement, aiming to establish globally-aligned security frameworks and standards. A pivotal aspect of this initiative was relocating their existing India-based offshore Security Operations Centre (SOC) to Japan, where the majority of the business and IT leadership were based.

A key driver for relocating the SOC was the absence of standardised security assessments, processes, and guidelines, which resulted in discrepancies across various geographical locations. Once the SOC had relocated, the Japan team would then be tasked with creating a robust security enhancement and risk management roadmap for all our client’s global entities.

Lacking the specialised capabilities and subject-matter expertise internally, our client sought strategic resourcing alternatives and engaged TEKsystems to drive this critical transformation.

Our proposal:Governance Game Plan

TEKsystems partnered with our client’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to understand their strategic roadmap for the security uplift and scope their resourcing requirements. Leveraging our extensive talent pool and a referral-based sourcing approach, our delivery team quickly identified seasoned security professionals, the majority of whom had bilingual capabilities across Japanese and English. As part of our comprehensive up-front screening process, we conducted in-person interviews with every consultant and performed multiple reference checks to validate their expertise, communication and stakeholder management skills, and cultural fit.

To alleviate our client’s resource management and administrative burden, TEKsystems allocated a dedicated Delivery Lead to provide oversight, manage the performance and retention of our consultants, and partner with our client to closely track the implementation of key milestones of the SOC build.

Real-world Results

TEKsystems deployed a squad of five Security Project Managers and Security Specialists to support the SOC build. During this multi-phase transformation, our consultants have made a significant impact by instilling best practices in risk management, cybersecurity, information management, and governance. They conducted several risk assessments and vulnerability mapping exercises to understand and bridge the existing security gaps and discrepancies. Additionally, they liaised with our client’s IT leadership to develop a comprehensive roadmap for creating globally-aligned security frameworks, identity and access management (IAM) policies, and user guidelines.

In addition, TEKsystems’ consultants delivered several training sessions and workshops to elevate risk maturity across the entire organisation and strengthen awareness of different types of cyberattacks, data breaches, and other threats, as well as ways to effectively combat them. Their focus is now on elevating the quality of security-related documentation and streamlining the monitoring and reporting processes by introducing tools like Jira and Confluence.
