By providing development teams with pre-coded application components and the ability to push code live instantly using CI/CD tools, PaaS enables faster speed to market and less time spent managing servers, patches and other foundational mechanisms.

What a Cloud Assessment Actually Does
A cloud assessment is a comprehensive, data-driven evaluation of your organisation's existing IT infrastructure, applications and data that helps size up your readiness to move to a cloud-native PaaS model.
Unlike with an IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) migration, which often involves simply shifting virtual machines, a PaaS-focused assessment should concentrate more on modernisation. That means the assessment should look at how feasible it will be for you to replace self-managed databases and application servers with managed cloud services, and what you need to do to prepare.

This core stage identifies which applications are candidates for PaaS, re-platforming or re-architecting.

- Migration costs: Estimate costs for training, external support and downtime.

It’s also important to know how ready the wider business, including your people and processes, are for a PaaS implementation. Knowing where the gaps are, and where you might encounter resistance, will help you build a smooth roll-out plan.
- Skill gaps: Identify whether your staff have the necessary skills for cloud management (like IaaS, container orchestration, FinOps, and DevOps) and identify any training needs.
- Process adjustment: Evaluate how existing IT operations (ITIL processes, monitoring, backups etc.) will adapt to a managed service model.
- Disaster recovery: Update your disaster recovery and business continuity plans to match your proposed cloud service provider’s capabilities.
