OWNING CHANGE IN BANKING

Our client is among the largest multinational banks in the world, serving over 70 million customers across the globe.

Transitioning to a Stateless Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

The challenge:Migration Clouded with Risks

One of our client’s flagship transformation initiatives in Singapore was the transition of their Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) from a persistent to a non-persistent (stateless) environment, deployed on cloud. This was key to freeing up storage space, reducing costs, and facilitating quicker recovery and service continuity.

Initially, our client wanted to outsource the entire piece of work to a professional services vendor who would own the end-to-end solutioning and deliver the intended outcomes. However, exorbitant implementation costs, high business risks, and tight timelines made it unfeasible for them to adopt an outcome-based solution.

Amidst an enterprise-wide cost rationalisation exercise and within a two-month timeframe, our client needed to ramp up their IT team with skilled engineers who had expertise in VMware and its associated tools. Enter TEKsystems, with the right expertise at the right time.

Our proposal:Quality-First, Cost-Effective Solution

TEKsystems engaged with key programme stakeholders to understand the implementation roadmap to package and migrate 12,000+ user accounts by the end of 2024. Our ability to ramp up and down a team of technical SMEs in VDI migration was vital in plugging existing knowledge gaps, optimising costs, and mitigating risks.

Our bespoke delivery model enabled our client to retain control of the project IP and technical outcomes for the VDI migration while TEKsystems owned the entire resource deployment and management. Our dedicated, non-billable, Delivery Lead was responsible for resource onboarding-offboarding, performance and retention management, KPI tracking and project status reporting. This helped reduce administrative overheads and freed up our client’s line management to focus on strategic priorities.

Real-world Results

To support our client’s VDI migration, TEKsystems deployed two Senior Application Packaging Engineers and two Virtualisation Migration Engineers. With their strong technical expertise within VMware App Volumes Manager, our consultants have successfully overseen the packaging, testing, migration, and deployment of over 7,000 user accounts and their associated applications from the existing persistent environment to the new stateless production environment. The team is on-track to transition the remaining 5,000 user accounts by the end of 2024.

TEKsystems’ dedicated Delivery Lead met all consultants, line managers, and business owners in-person on a monthly basis to manage performance, drive improvements and remedial actions, and provide visibility on milestone fulfilment. Our proactive approach to issue resolution and high-touch engagement have enabled us to maintain a 100% retention rate.

Following a new global mandate during the engagement, the scope of work of our consultants evolved from implementing the application packaging to providing training, quality assurance, and governance of the VDI migration. Our engagement model, successfully deployed in Singapore, is now being expanded to support other business-critical programmes of work across EMEA and the US.
