Help desk jobs involve working with employees (in-house) or external customers to document and troubleshoot problems with software applications, computers and other hardware. Help Desk Support may be provided by way of the telephone, a website, e-mail or a combination of methods.
Proficiency with an incident tracking system is typically required. Familiarity with knowledge bases and the ability to read and understand flowcharts is usually needed. Specific duties vary but typically include taking calls, logging calls into an incident tracking system, analysis and troubleshooting, and follow-up.
With the use of remote access applications, help desk jobs are sometimes performed in remote locations.
